Structure and Magnetism of Iron-Substituted Nickel Hydroxide Nanosheets

Nanosheets composed of stacked atomic layers exhibit unique magnetic, electrical, and electrochemical properties. Here, we report the effect iron substitution on structure magnetism nickel hydroxide, Ni(OH)2, nanosheets. Ni(OH)2 iron-substituted (5, 10, 20, 50 % Fe substitution) were synthesized using a rapid microwave-assisted hydrothermal process. Scanning transmission electron microscopy show materials are polycrystalline nanosheets that aggregate into micron-sized clusters. From X-ray diffraction characterization, substitutes α-Ni(OH)2 lattice up to 20 at. substitution. The different in-plane through-plane domain sizes, affects nanocrystallite shape anisotropy. magnetic response differs with substitution: 0% 5% ferromagnetic, while samples 10% 20% ferrimagnetic. competing interactions between magnetization sublattices anisotropy due crystalline lead reversal at low temperatures. correlation higher coercivity larger nanocrystalline size supports contributes observed ferrimagnetism. interplay morphology Fe-substituted points new ways influence in layered which has implications for batteries, catalysis, sensors, electronics.
